Ice Big Bluegills with Plastics -- "In-Depth Outdoors" Season 7, #3: Central Minnesota

James Holst and Joel Nelson use performance plastics to ice big bluegills in Central, MN. Watch or DVR the show on Fox Sports North, Sundays at 8 a.m.

Bluegills were the first fish I ever caught as a native Minnesotan.  I still enjoy catching them year around, but am always looking for videos to help me locate and catch big bluegills during the long Minnesota winter.  I have caught some big bluegills on North Long, Round, and Gull Lake over the past few winters.  They are a fun fish to go after when you are fishing with kids, because one they start biting, it usually stays pretty busy and keeps the kids from getting bored.  I love catching bluegills and hope this video and the tips help you having some success on your next trip.  They also fry up really nice!

Mann Lake Expanding Jobs to Brainerd, Minnesota

I am happy to read that Mann Lake is going to be using space in the old Wausau Paper Mill.   It will bring more jobs to Brainerd, and hopeful improve the economy and job markets for residents in the Brainerd Lakes Area.

Check out the article below:

Mann Lake expands jobs, manufacturing to Brainerd
Brainerd MN 506 James St. / PO Box 974 56401
A company that started in a Hackensack garage and now employs more than 450 people is expanding operations to Brainerd.
Mann Lake Ltd., employee-owned manufacturer of beekeeping supplies on a global scale, expects to hire five full-time employees initially for the Brainerd operation and add 20 more jobs by the end of 2016.

The Brainerd Mann Lake operation will cut and mill lumber for construction of bee hives. The cut lumber will then be shipped to Hackensack for assembly. Production in northeast Brainerd will start in January in the former Wausau Paper Mill, now the Brainerd Industrial Center. A ribbon cutting event at the mill Tuesday afternoon brought together supporters and key personnel.

Jaycee's Ice Fishing Extravaganza 2016: Brainerd, Minnesota

Link to Jaycee's Ice Fishing Extravaganza 2016

With this years warm weather, I am starting to wonder if they are going to announce a new date for the Ice Fishing Extravaganza.
I drive by Gull Lake every week, and lately I am surprise to see it still looks like this:

The lake has been frozen over on a few mornings, but recently it is ice free on Hole in the Day Bay.  This is the location of the ice fishing tournament, and as of yesterday, the conditions aren't looking too promising.

Either way, it is a great event that raises a great deal of money and awareness for charities, so I hope the event still takes place, but I doubt we will have enough ice if conditions don't change soon.

However, as a native northern Minnesotan, I know things can change quick!

Here is some information on the event from icefishing.org:

History of the Ice Fishing Extravaganza

In the early 1990s the Brainerd Jaycees had a desire to develop a signature project—a project that would rally members, raise money for local charities, and provide avenues for individual growth, personal development, and leadership. With the first contest being held in January 1991, it is certain the founders never expected this event would become the world’s largest ice fishing contest and put Brainerd, MN, on the map with a winter event that generates over $1-million in revenue for area businesses and over $150,000 for area charities annually
