First expansion in the Brainerd Industrial Park since the Mini Recession. Here is more information from the Brainerd Dispatch:
New construction will occur in the Brainerd Industrial Park for the first time since the Great Recession. Here is an excerpt from the Brainerd Dispatch Article:
Brainerd city officials said Friday they expect work to begin next week on a new 54,000-square-foot FedEx Ground sorting and distribution facility in the park. The sale of 9 acres of land was finalized Thursday after the city council first learned of the company's interest last October.
"You talk about a big deal for Brainerd, this is huge," said Gary Scheeler, city council president. "There's a lot of things happening in our town right now and this just adds to it."
Scheeler said not only will the facility bring in more jobs to the community, he expects it to increase interest in and value of available property in the industrial park. The distribution center could also lead to the growth of other area businesses and attract tenants to the Brainerd Industrial Center, Scheeler said.

El Tequila: Exemplary Mexican Dining In Baxter
El Tequila is a hidden gem of a Mexican restaurant in Baxter, and it seemed to hide from us the first couple of years after we moved to the Brainerd Lakes Area. I have sampled most of the menu and quite of few of the beverages. They have a great margarita whether you drink them on the rocks or blended. They also have quite a few specials, and one of the last times we went on a weeknight, we enjoyed one dollar cans of ice cold Tecate with limes.
I have to share my preference to their combination plates, but I have also been known to venture outside the box and have a Molcajete which is a feast fit for royalty.
The quality of their food is great and the prices are reasonable. None of the food on the menu is expensive, and the authentic music and colorful decor make any visit to this place a great and unique experience.
Tonight, I had the #53 combination platter: one taco, one enchilada, and the prince of the plate was the Chile Relleno. The portions are large and the service is impeccable. I would recommend this place as a great Sunday stop after spending the weekend enjoying the lakes or to cure the weekend's hangover. Please add your take on El Tequila to the comments. Garage Sale Signs Law for Perpetual Garage Salers
Are you breaking the law? More regulations being enforced in the city of Brainerd...maybe they should worry about more important crimes? Watch out for the garage sale police this summer.
Via the Brainerd Dispatch:
Summer and garage sale seasons go hand-in-hand, and city officials want to remind residents of the regulations regarding garage sales and signs.
Brainerd City Planner Mark Ostgarden said city regulations state a garage sale cannot last more than 72 hours or occur more than four times at a given location within one year.
Signs identifying garage sale locations have started to pop up as well, Ostgarden said, with several major street intersections becoming a popular location for signs. Garage sale signs are permitted in the community with the following limits:
• One off-premises sign is permitted on private property, which means permission is required from the landowner where the sign will be placed.
• A sign is allowed for a period of seven days prior to the garage sale.
• Signs should not be more than 6 square feet in size and not more than 3 feet in height.
Garage sale signs are not permitted in any street right-of-way, meaning signs appearing at street corners are violating the city ordinance. Garage sale signs observed by city staff and determined to be in a street right-of-way will be removed and disposed.
Residents with questions should call the city of Brainerd at 218-828-2309.

Katie Wig and Last Call at Ernie's on Gull
Musical group based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota
Damon Grilz (guitar)
Tyler Hammer (bass & guitar)
Nick Schwen (drums)
Katie Wig (vocals)
Katie Wig and Last Call sound great live! Check out their show tonight from 7-10pm at Ernie's on Gull.
We went out to Ernie's last night for some appetizers and sat outside eating, drinking, and people watching. There was a good crowd and the boat slip was filled with summer lake people out enjoying the beautiful weather.
When we got home, we heard some really good music streaming out of a garage near our home. We sat out in the yard around a campfire and listened to the music. I think the band practicing was Katie Wig and Last Call. Either way, we were blown away by how good they sounded and we will be checking out their show tonight at Ernies.

This was the first bar I ever went to in Brainerd. If you ever get a chance to visit this place, you will not be disappointed. It is in a basement and has one of the coolest oak bars from back in the day! It is also very haunted, and if you go to eat or have a drink be sure to ask about the report they had conducted by ghost hunters from Fargo. It is kept behind the bar and it is a fascinating read about all the interesting events that the workers had encountered in this enlightened spot!

Brainerd City Council Approves Fee for Food Trucks
Via the Brainerd Dispatch:
The Brainerd City Council Monday approved a fee for food truck operators looking to serve up hot dogs, sandwiches, tacos and more in the city of Brainerd.
The council held the second reading of Ordinance No. 1437, which specifies a $500 annual fee for food trucks, wagons, stands and food carts. The council then unanimously approved the adoption of the ordinance following the second reading.
A memo from City Planner Mark Ostgarden provided information from 17 Minnesota cities about their own annual fees for food trucks. The annual fee of $500 is higher than the fee charged by the other cities that provided feedback.
"Based on the additional information from other cities, it is recommended that the city council consider reducing the annual fee considerably to be more in line with other cities," Ostgarden wrote. "Based on other cities' annual fees, it appears $50-100 would be more appropriate."
A short term or seasonal fee is also uncommon, Ostgarden said. Of the 17 surveyed cities, only Albert Lea, Austin and Bloomington offered short term fees.

As bird flu costs mount for egg industry, questions arise about how virus is spreading : Wsj
This sign is common in many areas of Minnesota. Driving back from Perham to Brainerd last weekend, we saw this sign on every chicken and turkey house along Highway 10. Read the following article on the benefits of pastured poultry and the importance of strong immune systems in poultry operations.
Brunnquell’s company has 1.2 million chickens that live either in an enclosed outdoor area or a pasture, but he has moved them indoors until the virus is no longer a threat. Brunnquell theorized that free-range, pasture and backyard chickens are surviving the virus threat because they have stronger immune systems than chickens that live inside buildings in cages.
McGraw said the virus is being spread by rodents, waterfowl flying over the commercial facilities and by people, machinery or tools who come in contact with it and then unknowingly track it to a commercial facility.

Here is more about Joel Edwin from Rocktown Music:
Joel, Rocktown Music Owner
Joel is a third generation resident of St. Cloud and a graduate of Apollo High School. "When the opportunity came to open a music store in the St. Cloud Area, I knew I had to do it. I couldn't snooze," He says. "This is the town I was raised in. I've been playing at the local venues since I was a kid. I've been involved in a big way in many of the local stores and studios since the eighties. I've done a lot in the local music community. I knew I wanted to own a music store, and I knew I wanted to raise my kids in St. Cloud... it only made sense to do it all in one place."
As a professional musician:
Joel's career began in his teen years. He and high school friends put together a great little band and played bars and ballrooms across the state with Joel on lead guitar and backing vocals. "Back then it was a lot of oldies... I mean, we did Van Halen too," he laughs. Just out of high school, he went on the road with very popular hard rock band, Mace. "I was the youngest guy in the band by 10 years. The tour bus literally pulled up to the front door of my parent's house. I was 17, just graduated high school. I kissed my mom good-bye and got on board. The band leader greeted me by saying, 'Sit down, kid, it's going to be a long ride.'" He continues, "I learned a lot about sound, lights, and the business side of running a band from Kent. It was his band. He's a good guy." Mace was a springboard for Joel to start his own band, Liberator. "That was the age of excess. I had double guitar stacks, 64 par cans, towers of PA to the ceiling... it was nuts. The lead singer, Lisa, was the only female in the group. She did everyone's hair." Liberator got some attention from radio stations, record labels, and endorsements. "We were almost there, then Nirvana hit and it was different overnight." Joel spent the grunge years playing the in several of the top cover band acts that toured the midwest. Joel met Scott (the piano teacher at Rocktown Music) at an audition for a touring band called Visionary. They both made it in. He started lead singing when the band manager fired the vocalist and put Joel in the spotlight. "He must have known I could do it or else he might not have fired him. Within a few days we were on stage with Gary Richrath from REO Speedwagon, and I was singing and playing guitar." When Visionary disbanded, Joel convinced Scott to move from Wisconsin to St. Cloud and they formed a band called Rocktown. Scott has lived here ever since. "We played our 1000th show at Bubba's. They put our picture in the paper and made an event out of it." Rocktown is actually kind of still together. "We added a member and now we're called Puppet Show. Spinal Tap has never opened for us," he chuckles. "We only play once in awhile since everyone's pretty busy with other projects." Lately, his focus has been on the Joel Edwin acoustic project. Joel plays guitar, piano, mandolin, ukulele, and, of course he sings. "It's great. I'm older now, so the excessive volume and heavy gear don't appeal to me as much as when I was younger. I get to play a lot of different instruments that I wouldn't be able to play in an electric band. Plus I get to play some of the nicest resorts in Minnesota. Beautiful venues, great scenery, nice perks. It's a perfect fit for me." Not that he doesn't still play rock music. Joel is in a few assemblies of musicians that are seen regularly at the Benton Station and The Red Carpet. He's doing vocals, guitar and keys. "I still love to play electric guitar, but I'm a pretty versatile guy" You can often find updates on Joel's acoustic and electric band dates on the Facebook page, or just ask anyone at the store what's coming up!
